Mom, I want a Dog.

Future Cardiologist wants a dog.

She Who Rules wants a purple dog.  (Something to do with play doh and a dog shaped cookie cutter.)

With FC’s 9th birthday around the corner we set out to the Toledo Humane Society to adopt a family member.  I had checked out their website for a few days and had a few dogs in mind that I really wanted to meet.

Terrick

Loved Terrick.  From the second I saw him.

I mean, how could you not?dsc_8945-copy

Look at those eyes.

LOOK AT THEM!!!!  He’s practically begging me to take him home.

Unfortunately he was a little larger than what I could deal with.  It broke my heart, but we couldn’t adopt him.  He’s still available for adoption, btw.  Contact the Toledo Humane Society if you’re interested in giving him a proper home.

Next up was Mr. Beans.

Mr. Beans didn’t like us.  At all.

Then we saw him.

Cowering in a little crate in a separate room from the others.  His name was Dasher, and when he looked at me with his little face I knew I had to have him the kids had to have him.

When the teenager/volunteer/foster mom to Dasher realized that I was serious about taking him home, she instantly started in with his bad habits.

“He’s not housebroken.”

“He bites. A lot.”

“I’m not sure how he is with kids.”

“He’s crazy with other dogs and little ones.”

“Did I mention he bites?”

I think she would have told me that Dasher was responsible for the assassination of JFK, invented trans fats, and was Obama’s campaign manager if it meant that we wouldn’t be taking him home.  I shooed her out of the room so that we could spend some more time with him without her watching us like a hawk.  I know she’s attached to him.

How could she not be?

I mean really.

He’s for the kids after all. Look at that face.

When he fell asleep on my little girls lap I knew it was all over.  She cried when we had to leave him for a day and a half.  He’s getting the snip tomorrow.  Poor little guy.

Wish us luck.  I have a feeling we’re going to need it.

    SO glad you adopted!
(You probably haven’t read that one of my former jobs was Dogcatcher, and I hated/loved the job.)

He’ll chew, so make sure you have a ton of “approved” things for him to satisfy that need.

He has intelligent eyes, and looks like there’s some Lab in him. You said size was an issue… how big is he gonna get?

He’s adorable! Best of luck. I highly recommend the Dog Whisperer.. there’s the show, and he has some books out. Very helpful when we were adopted by a dog a couple of years ago.

A cute looking puppy, to be sure. I’m not a dog person myself, a cat person even less, but giving you props for going the adoption route. I don’t believe in “good luck”…so, have fun!

Ohhh man that sorta looks like my guy when he was a little one!

Like Greybeard said – make sure you put all the stuff you don’t want chewed away and get tons of “approved” chew toys.

Oh and keep him supervised in the backyard too – my guy destroyed the back when we left him out one time by himself.

Goodluck and put up more pictures when you can!

Oh goodness… those eyes! I cannot possibly look at the humane society’s website. I already have three. One of which was adopted. I bet that little buggar is going to be a handful but something in his eyes says he will be faithful to you and your kids forever. Oh what a cutie!

    “Did I mention he bites?”

Untrained puppies bite, with their sharp needle teeth. They’re teething, that’s what they do. He will DESTROY any wood furniture he can find, so make sure you have plenty of chew toys. Dogs and puppies especially love rawhide.

If you have never trained a dog before you MUST take a puppy training class. They train you how to think like a dog. It’s really worth it.

Next watch at least 4 episodes of “Dog Whisperer”. He gives you the inside psychology of training dogs. Really. He is spot on.

If he chews on the furniture, grab a rawhide toy, hide it behind your back so he can’t see it, grab him by the neck (he may try to nip), and tell him “No!” in a mean voice. Now give him the rawhide and say “Good dog!” in a nice voice. Do this all the time and watch him constantly until he is trained. He will eventually get the idea that the furniture is not his, and the rawhide is.

Be sure to place a rawhide toy on his bed so it will get his scent on it.

BTW, there is a difference between a “nip” and a “bite”. Dogs rarely bite. A “bite” means he breaks the skin. A “nip” is a warning, or he’s trying to say “you are not the boss of me.” You must assert yourself as the alpha dog and make sure (by actions) that he follows your rules: no eating the furniture, no peeing on the carpets, no eating human food, etc.

Also, most human food is bad for dogs, don’t feed them that. Chocolate is also bad, the caffeine can kill them. However some people feed their dogs chocolate with no ill effects. Same goes for people food.
