If he chews on the furniture, grab a rawhide toy, hide it behind your back so he can't see it, grab him by the neck (he may try to nip), and tell him "No!" in a mean voice. Now give him the rawhide and say "Good dog!" in a nice voice. Do this all the time and watch him constantly until he is trained. He will eventually get the idea that the furniture is not his, and the rawhide is.

Be sure to place a rawhide toy on his bed so it will get his scent on it.

BTW, there is a difference between a "nip" and a "bite". Dogs rarely bite. A "bite" means he breaks the skin. A "nip" is a warning, or he's trying to say "you are not the boss of me." You must assert yourself as the alpha dog and make sure (by actions) that he follows your rules: no eating the furniture, no peeing on the carpets, no eating human food, etc.

Also, most human food is bad for dogs, don't feed them that. Chocolate is also bad, the caffeine can kill them. However some people feed their dogs chocolate with no ill effects. Same goes for people food.

“Did I mention he bites?”

Untrained puppies bite, with their sharp needle teeth. They're teething, that's what they do. He will DESTROY any wood furniture he can find, so make sure you have plenty of chew toys. Dogs and puppies especially love rawhide.

If you have never trained a dog before you MUST take a puppy training class. They train you how to think like a dog. It's really worth it.

Next watch at least 4 episodes of "Dog Whisperer". He gives you the inside psychology of training dogs. Really. He is spot on.

Oh goodness... those eyes! I cannot possibly look at the humane society's website. I already have three. One of which was adopted. I bet that little buggar is going to be a handful but something in his eyes says he will be faithful to you and your kids forever. Oh what a cutie!

Ohhh man that sorta looks like my guy when he was a little one!

Like Greybeard said - make sure you put all the stuff you don't want chewed away and get tons of "approved" chew toys.

Oh and keep him supervised in the backyard too - my guy destroyed the back when we left him out one time by himself.

Goodluck and put up more pictures when you can!

A cute looking puppy, to be sure. I'm not a dog person myself, a cat person even less, but giving you props for going the adoption route. I don't believe in "good luck"...so, have fun!

He's adorable! Best of luck. I highly recommend the Dog Whisperer.. there's the show, and he has some books out. Very helpful when we were adopted by a dog a couple of years ago.

SO glad you adopted!
(You probably haven't read that one of my former jobs was Dogcatcher, and I hated/loved the job.)

He'll chew, so make sure you have a ton of "approved" things for him to satisfy that need.

He has intelligent eyes, and looks like there's some Lab in him. You said size was an issue... how big is he gonna get?
