If anyone out there has any advice on how to get an unhousebroken puppy housebroken, I’d appreciate it.

Hi Epi, I’m a lurker, finally de-lurking myself. I’m so happy Dasher has found a new forever home with you! I sent you an e-mail with my advice on housebreaking (look for one from singinggardeners….). Looking forward to the disgustingly cute puppy pics. :)

Crate training. Get him a kennel small enough that he is comfy to lay down and stand up but not much more than that. Allow him PLENTY of trips outside throughout the day and give him praise until you are blue in the face when he does his business outside.

Oh and stock up on 409 and paper towels.

Crate training like bernice said, he won’t pee where he sleeps is the theory. Try not to use food motivated praise. Just lost of pets and kisses.

I agree with Bernice. Crate training was the best thing we ever did. Also, you can confine him to a small area (not his crate) preferably with an outside door to the fenced yard. Put newspaper down except for one corner. His food and crate or bed go there. Praise when he goes on the paper over and over. Every day or so, shrink the size of the paper and move it towards the door. Eventually, move it outside when he understands what the paper is for. Move the paper to the grass then remove the paper. Good luck. I feel pets are a must for children. We have a dog and two guinea pigs.

    You’ve got mail.

Crates are wonderful things, give him regular meal and water breaks (don’t leave his food down all the time) and chux pads by the door he’ll use to go outside. And patience. Lots of patience.

What’s always worked for us is taking the dog out every two hours…if yours will be an older puppy you might can wait longer, but two hours is usually a good place to start. praise them like crazy if they tinkle outside. Also found it works to keep them in a crate when you can’t watch them(i.e. over night, if you leave for a little while). If you find it hard to watch the little bugger while your around the house, put it on a leash that is tied to you. Seriously can’t let them out of your sight! Good luck!!

We did crate training and praise like the previous posters all said. We didn’t get mad or put Jersey or Stanley (my two pups) nose in whatever they did – liquid or solid. We trained them that the first thing they do when let out of their crate is to go outside immediately and we didn’t let them back in until they did their business. Good luck and I want to see pix!!
