My people.

I have people.  A family…  People who I’ve been through hell and back with…

(Thank you Lifestar)

People who have taught me the basics… Everything from how to back an ambulance into a parking spot to how to make a proper towel roll to how to not freak out when your patient is blue.

(Thank you, Pseudo Dad)

People who seem to have the same black cloud that I have.  Damn that black cloud.  Why, Superstar Partner, will they *not* allow us to work together anymore?

(Thank you, Superstar Partner)

People who keep me grounded.  People who remind me that despite my insecurities, I really do know what I’m doing and most of the time I rock my job.  I might not be doing emergency runs all day long, but I do make a difference to the people I encounter.

People who never fail to make me want to laugh and simultaneously strangle the hell out of them.

People who have ALWAYS had my back.  Through all of the BS.  Through all of the drama.  The people who always know what music you need to hear.  The people who rub your shoulders when you’ve had that particularly bad day.   The people who won’t pull punches.  The people who amaze you.  Constantly.  Those people who are more than just your people.  Those people who truly are your friends.

I am surrounded by amazing people.  Both live and in person and those that I know solely through their written words.  Just when a girl thinks she has zero support system, her people rally.  Her people get her through the impossible.

(Thank you Lisa and Bernice, thank you Medic Matthew, thank you Ninja Medic, Thank you Kyle and Matty, and Corey and Ben and Pat.)

So, why is this girl so grateful?  Check this out:

That’s me.  I’m holding the syllabus to to the Paramedic program that I was accepted into yesterday.  The admission process has all but rendered me a hot mess, but I’m in.

I’m in, ya’ll.

Now, if one of my people would be so kind as to explain acid base to me like I’m a three-year-old….

Well, tell you what when you find someone to explain it to you can you explain it to me? I forgot that from all those years of science classes back in the dark ages!

CONGRATULATIONS GIRL! I knew you had it in you! and besides you had to get in; otherwise I’d have to come get you for letting me go through this misery by myself! EVIL LOL! :)

Ok, here’s all ya gotta know about acid/base balance.

1.) Deviation from a normal pH is bad, mm’kay?
2.) pH down, CO2 up, HCO3 WNL = Respiratory Acidosis
3.) pH up, CO2 down, HCO3 WNL = Respiratory Alkalosis
4.) pH down, CO2 WNL, HCO3 down = Metabolic Acidosis
5.) pH up, CO2 WNL, HCO3 up = Metabolic Alkalosis
6.) After taking the NREMT-P exam it doesn’t matter any more, until you take CCEMT-P, and start getting into multiple system organ failure then it’s game on.

Congrats hun! Remember, you’ve got a network of tutors available to ya!

Congratulations on acceptance to Medic School. If you’re anywhere near as good a medic as you are a writer, you’ll do just fine! :D

What can I say, Epi? WELL _ DONE!!!!!

And misery will love company – I’m back in school in September myself as I’m going to make a run at getting into nursing school. A&P I to start, and we’ll see what happens from there.

And what MedicMatthew said about acid/base balance is dead nuts. The CCEMT-P course beats it into you like you’re a government mule.

So glad you’re in. Glad things are looking up for you. Most of all, I’m so glad you have people. GOOD people.

I’ve got acid-base…its something RTs/RTs students have to know like the back of our hand.I’ve got tons of notes, hints, tips, tricks, etc. for you.Just shoot me an email or a phone call anytime, day or night.

    Remember this much right now:
    Normal pH 7.40. (Range 7.35-7.45)
    Less than 7.40 is acidosis.
    Greater than 7.40 is alkalosis.
Respiratory or metabolic acidosis/alkalosis? Look at the HCO3 and/ or BE.

Remember metabolic issues are very rarely ever compensated. Your COPDers amd chronic lungers will often be in a compensated respiratory acidosis or alkalosis. HCO3 moves in the same direction as pH to compensate it, so for instance if HCO3 is elevated and pH is decreased, this is partially compensated. CO2 moves opposite the pH.

I have no idea why they won’t let us work together anymore. I have applications in at the big 3 in Toledo and one in Fremont area. Plus my brother is using some contacts he knows. I can’t wait to leave. I will miss you but I will not miss the shit at itty bitty ambulance company. Glad you got into medic school finally. You will do great.
