Make sure he knows that there are others like him out there, waiting for him. When he gets to College/University, when he gets out into the world in the jobs that he loves, he'll find them. They'll be waiting for him, and he will be loved.
And the bullies will still be hurting, and will be left behind.

So I ran a call with a new paramedic a week ago, We were dispatched class 1 for a cardiac arrest, Reported a 47 year old male with no pulse. No further info given, On the computer we found that the caller is the patient and is awaiting EMS outside. My new partner is in his glory hyped up to treat a serious patient, We arrive on scene in 2-3 minutes and find a male sitting in a rocking chair on the porch in no visible distress. My partner with bags in had tripping over himself runs to the porch and begins his assessment. The male stated that he was watching House on TV and they had a patient whom did not have a pulse and was in cardiac arrest as the doctors stated on the television. The patient showed that he assessed his pulse himself by placing two fingers over the top of his hand and finding no pulse figures he is in cardiac arrest. The male decided that it would be best for a doctor to check him out as being in cardiac arrest is probably not good for him and he may need a new medication. Reasoning with this patient was not in the cards he was promptly loaded onto the litter and transported the 8 minutes to the hospital. The patient was transported and treated by my new partner as he was still trying to compose himself. The patient was released quickly from the hospital with pseudo heart pills "M&M's" by a caring seasoned doc. hope you get a chuckle out of this call as my new partner has yet to live it down.

The hospital in our little town is 1/2 mile through the woods from our home. I turn base to final over my house when I land at the helipad there. Anytime we get a call to fly the 12 minute flight from our base back to my home I worry it'll be someone I know.
Sometimes it is.
And man, it IS hard. But ya swallow hard and do what ya gotta do because folks need your help. That's your job.
And when the job is done, then you cry.
Thanks Epi.

Truly sorry to hear about the loss Epi, but I think you handled it well with your kids. Shielding them doesn't help... Trust me, BTDT always told mine the truth.
